My mouse is physically dying

Recently, my mouse of two years started randomly dropping and reacquiring my drags. It's a Microsoft Intellimouse Optical (I think 2.0, but could be 3.0). BTW, this is my second Intellimouse and yes, I know they drop like flies. I just love the feel of this mouse and would like to get it working properly again.

For example, if I try to highlight the line of text just below here by clicking and dragging, instead of this:

this is the example text

It could end up like this:

this is the example text

or even worse. This is obviously a physical wear problem with the mouse. Has anybody experienced this? Is there a documented way to open this guy and see if I can fix the problem? I'd rather not destroy it by trying to open it myself w/o documentation or instructions.

Thanks!

Id call 2 years a long healthy life for a mouse..toss it out and get something new. Just a suggestion.

fixed.

No, you can't open it, yes, the feet wear out, yes, the spring for the wheel can get out of place, yes, the cord can become loose.

Everything about it is fine except for the left button drag behavior.

Bah! If I'm going to have to buy a new mouse anyway, I might as well see if I can fix it. If and when I do this, I'll post my results.

Perhaps the mouse button wore out. Back in my Amiga days, me and my dad went through hundreds of mouse buttons. Could cause problems like that... although it mainly involved clicking about 7 or 8 times to try it.

In Europe, Microsoft gives a 5 year warranty on all Intelli mice. You just need to call them, tell them what's wrong, tell them your serial number and they'll send you a new mouse free of charge. I already had two first generation IntelliMouse Explorers replaced after 2+ years. I would just give MS a call before you get a new one.

Do this...look it up in the Hot Deals Forum. I had an Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 that crapped out on me...sent in a copy of the bottom and within 5 days a brand new retail Intellimouse Explorer 4.0 was at my door. Did not cost me a dime.

you went through HUNDREDS of mousebuttons ? :p What is that ? Some kind of click-OCD ? :)

(Btw. remember that times too....actually the mouse w/ the A1200 was one of the best ball-mice around IMHO. Also remember once replacing my clickers on the old [A500] mosue with some switches i got from an electronic store....but still..hundreds ? :)
