My mouse is lost.

I recienty purchased a Microsoft wheel mouse optical for my son's computer. But when i hooked it up to the USB port, xp see's it as his Microsoft force feedback 2 joystick. I evendeleted it and loaded the drivers and software for the mouse, but it still thinks it the joystick. On my computer it works fine. What can I do to fix this short of reinstalling xp?
