In their defense, they are ferrets, and it's hard to find their crap. But I found some in the room I stay in and I took it out.

But since you say they are slobs and there is pet crap on the floor, coffee might not take care of the problem.

I could care less about the rest of the house.

Oh, ferrets.

Ferrets just naturally stink. Nothing you can do except give those ferrets adorable little concrete booties.

Is everyone in agreement about the air purifier?
I think it would be one of the, if not the, best choices. It continually cycles the air, and thats what I would need when the vent is open.

Try getting a couple of those baking soda cartons. Put one in each corner of your room.

I think the smell is in the carpet. Maybe if I dumped the baking soda on the carpet. But the vent just brings more and more sour smelling air into the room.

close the vent

Today's high is 104 degrees.

Sweat it out...literally.

I hope your parents are charging you very little to no rent.

Couldnt hurt to give it a try in your room then.

My apologies, I thought we were talking about cats or dogs or something much larger than ferrets. Still pretty bad though, they should probably give them away if they can't take care of them.

As for getting rid of the smell just in your room, try shoving a towel into the bottom of the door and leaving any and all windows in there wide open. That's about all I can think of.

i know they make sprays for cars that circuilate through the vents to get rid of mustly moldy odor... it also may be worth a shot to spray that as you run the whole houses ac...

you gotta remember, you can't just isolate your room... smell with seep through no matter what. just keep that in mind.

My roommate's matress smelled like ass when he moved it in. Slowly, but surely, the smell is starting to go away, but it's taken since December to start taking on the smell of my house (which is a really nice smell from the 1958 hardwood floors). There are companies that will come in and treat your house or just one room for smells...but I have a feeling it will take some harsh chemicals to fix your problem.

you need to open the window, you need a bucket, squeegee, hot water, bleach, orange soap, you add 1 part bleach to 10 parts water. Use the mixture on the walls with the squeegee. Rent a rug shampooer and use it, make several pass thrus over a 2 day period, wash all sheets, blankets, curtains etc.

you need to attack the sources of odor not just try to mask them.

$100. Very little, but I dunno, I would rather pay more and have a clean place I can take pride in.

I dont plan on being there forever.
I know I cannot change their habits or the smell of that house. But I am under the impression that an air purifier and some scented things (candles, lysol) could make it bearable in my room for the few months I am there. I want to be out early next year.

it would only take you a couple days effort to make the room liveable and it's just the kind of deep cleaning that people should do yearly anyway.

I agree, they should clean their house.
But I dont have the time or money to do those things right now. As it is, I am leaving at 7 am, and getting back after 8pm everyday. Im going to try something easier first. If it doesnt work, well, Ill try more drastic measures.

Update: Air Purifier did not seem to work. Been on since yesterday afternoon. Smells just as bad. I can smell the house all over my clothes.
I wonder if I should live in my car.

Try the vinegar. Another thing to do that is good at killing odors is pouring about 2-3 inches of ammonia in a bucket and leaving it in a sealed room for a few hours. Air out the room and voila!...

We had a similar problem in our college apartment. It stunk and we couldn't get rid of it. Candles, fabreeze, lysol, nothing fixed it. Turns out there was a dead mouse under the couch. We threw the dead mouse out on the street and our apartment smelled fine the next day.

Just gotta find what is causing the stink. If it's the carpet or walls, then you're in trouble.

It's the carpet, vent, walls, ceilings, couches, everything.
The smell has permeated everything.
It's had years and years to do this.
I hope to be out of there very very soon.
Until then, I have to live in that ******.
