Hehe... the cheapest way is to slow down your fan (less voltage = slower = quieter, but also less cooling). You may even burn your CPU. Of course that's why you do sound-related research prior to buying a cooler :)

You can get the Millennium-Thermal Glaciator II which is very quiet and cools vey well, too.

One more thing... Once you get your cooler's fan to quiet down (or get a quieter one), you will be able to hear those case fans. They were very audible in my system. So in order to get a quiet system, you will need to replace those case (and possibly the power supply's) fans, or use case sound insulation like Dynamat or something foam-based...

Just did that 7V mod for my loud as heck Dr Thermal Integrtion V77L.

LOTS quieter and my average temps only went up 2 or 3 degrees.

Only have 1GHZ duron and to 80mm fans and I am averaging 39 degrees in windows 41 degrees running serious sam for 30 minutes.

Nice thing about this is it was way cheap. I already had an unused 4 to 3 pin adapter and all I needed to buy was a $1.49 package of "butt connectors" from radio shack. Radio Shack also sells a 4pin extender for $2.99 that can be used.

Another thing that is nice is that you don't need to remove you heatsink. For a novice like me that's another adventure I don't need (the TI V77L was a lot harder to put on than advertised).

You might check the ratings for your fan. My was rated at 7 to 17 volts so I was pretty sure it would run ok. I guess on some fans there is a chance they won't start spinning at 4 volts.

I can't find the link right now but there is an easy guide on using a SPST switch to allow you to switch between 7 and 12 volts so you can have a quiet mode for your CPU and a loud mode if things get hot.

If your motherboard will support it get a Alpha 8045 heatsink, they use 80mm fans and you can get great cooling and much lower noise with the 80mm fans.
