is there a way to avoid this? so that it falls asleep when there isn't a video playing, and doesn't when there is?

System specs; drivers you are using; what monitor; what kind of connection you are using and what have you tried to fix it.

Yes. Control Panel -> Power Options. Change the "turn off display after" to as many minutes as you like.

There are also programs that keep the display awake. Your issue is that the computer thinks you're not doing anything when you watch a stream in your browser so it sleeps the display.

I had this problem in the past. It would only happen after I played NBA 2k13 (possibly 2k15) for some reason.

The quick solution I found was to perform a CHKDSK on the C: drive. So try that.
