my moms boyfriend has always creeped me out. i know this sounds paranoid but i think he is creepy enough to have a camera set up in my room... bathroom... somewhere? if it is a wireless camera on our network is there a way to find out? i have a program called The Dude that allows me to monitor the network, however since I don't have a clue what I am looking at it is rather pointless. Can anyone offer some assistance please?

TIA

Uh, are you a girl? It probably wouldn't use the same network/protocol. I dunno, never spied on anyone yet.

I think trying to monitor him through 'hidden cameras' is going to be futile. Just buy some lighter fluid and matches.

ok I'm just kidding. don't do that. I don't know much about that TheDude program, but basically you're looking for an attached device to your router that doesn't correspond to some device you already know about in your house. Of course, that assumes that the device, if there is one, remains connected to the network continuously. If not, you'd check the dhcp logs like somebody else suggested.

quite frankly, i don't know your mom's boyfriend, but i think its a long shot that 1.) he's placed a hidden camera in your personal space and 2.) that camera is connected to your sub network. Even if (1) were true, I would think it far more likely that the alleged recording device is designed to store the images/video on the device itself for later unloading after it is recovered from wherever it was concealed.

looks like the dude should do all you need, but I'm not 100% sure as I can't use it but since it is limited to your subnet you should only see entries for devices on your network.
this would be your pc + router then add 1 entry for however many other devices you know of, if the number that shows up is more that should mean there is something else on the network unknown to you.

you could alternatively check your router's DHCP as previously mentioned check the manuals or manufacturer site for info on how to get to the administrator panel and check DHCP clients, you should only have enough entries for the devices you know on the network, like your computer.

and finally, I hope you have looked for a camera, I mean how many places can one hide such a thing, if you seriously think there may be one check all the vents and stuff I guess...

quite frankly, i think youre right. but he IS a very creepy guy and i just need to be reassured. i feel so unsafe in my own house. well, my own mothers house i guess.

i guess im paranoid because he is always doing shit with the network. we have the dsl modem, a wireless router, a wireless access point, and a wireless print server. he is always changing stuff around... new router, new access point. he does this very often. it just seems odd, but then again maybe i am just dumb and there is a reason for it. who knows.
