My mom is needing a laser printer that will last a long time without breaking down.

She had an older HP 4+ that was huge, but she did years of printing with only adding toner...I just got her the Samsung ML2010, and in one toner, it now prints streaks in the pages 🙁

Anyway, what printer (regardless of cost, but not like $400) is the smartest buy for her?

Any tips/info is appreciated.

When it comes to lasers, I always lean to HP. My Laserjett 4000 has been running for years - just add toner. It should run for several more years.

Streaks are often indicative of a bad cartridge - the drum specifically. That happens with refills that exceed the 2nd or 3rd time unless the drum is replaced.

You did not mention what the duty cycle is for your mom - i.e., how many copies a month?

For light use - this is decent:

1320

As corkyg stated you must watch the drum to cartridge ratio if only the cartridge is replaced each time. The duty cycle is critical in determing your laser printer. The heavier the duty cycle the more she needs to pay attention to monthly duty cycle specs.

The Brother HL-5140 is under $150 and has good specs and a big toner cart.

I've had an older 5040 for several years now, it's worked well but I don't print much.

my family uses a brother MFC-8420. does faxing, color copying/scanning, but of course laser printing (black and white only - who needs color?).

but dave has the right idea. the HL-5140 is a great printer and i think it even has ethernet built in to it.

She might do 500-1000 pages a month. So the HP LaserJet 1320 is the one I should get?

It will last a long time with just adding toner?

I have an HP 3150 and that thing has been running great for the last year - year and a half. It has been discontinued, but is a great model. I wouldn't hesitate to get another HP.

Please keep in mind the fact that Samsung 2010's come with a starter cartridge good for only 2000 pages. Just replacing it with a regular cartridge 45-70$ may fix the problem. While Brother lasers are good, the image drum runs out very quickly (<2 yrs) and usually costs more than a new printer. As suggested by many, HP lasers are the most reliable and long lasting.

From your mother's usage, it looks like you need a medium usage printer, so a HP 1022 - monthly volume <8000 pages - seems about right. I am sorry I have no experience using this printer.

Get an HP laserjet - that cost between $150 to $200.

Check on the price of toner cartridges before you buy printer.
