My modem stopped - Assist please!

Three days ago my modem (Sportster 56.6) started going real slow. So slow that Netscape timed out. I checked my line, OK. I reinstalled the modem (software), OK. Now I get: "COULD NOT OPEN PORT" message when trying to access my modem. I tried another good modem, and get the same message. I think there might be some setting in the bios that could be causing this. Any thoughts? What else am I missing?

Internal or External modem? What OS?

Could be several things.....

In Device Manager:

Check to see that you have only the one modem installed. Sometimes windows may load another driver at same time for the modem...causing a conflict.

Check your Com ports. Any conflicts? Change your comport speed to a higher setting..it's probably at 9600.

Last ditch, assuming you have Win98 or Win2k....remove your comports and Modem...hopefully they'll redetect correctly....

Also....you said "three days ago.." Did you install or change anything to do with System or Networking? Tweaking perhaps?

Good Luck!

Win 98SE, on a Pentium 266 with 64 megs of EDO RAM. Internal Modem.

I tried deleting the modem out of device manager, and during reboot, it noticed that and tried to reinstall it. Still came up with the: "Could not Open Port". Changing the Win.ini com port to more than 9600, will that really make a difference? I've noticed that it lists all the com ports at 9600.

Thanks
