My method of cleaning my cat's box

I posted in another thread, but thought I would share here.

Actually with three cats and two boxes and cleaning once per day each it's not bad with pine litter.

What my method is is to first tip everything to one corner of the box. Then I use a wide slotted scoop to sift out the solids. The pine dries it out well and absorbs any odors. I move everything to a 1 gallon plastic bag. Now I use the wide slot scoop to scoop up litter and try and shake out all the powder from the urine into another corner of the box. I then take the majority of the pellets left in the scoop and dump them in another corner of the box.

I repeat this until I have one pile of powder/pellets and another pile of clean pellets.

Then I switch to One of these wire strainers, I use a medium sized one that can fit inside the gallon bag. I then take scoops up from the corner of pellets/powder and sift out the urine powder.

When I am done the litter is almost perfectly clean.

About once every season I clean the boxes fully with mild bleach.

Just an FYI...a lot of friends and family I got using this method.

I use Arm & Hammer scented litter - you can go 1 week or so, without any scent permeating your place.

Daily? If I wanted to work that much for a pet, I would get a dog.

Clump litter seems to work fine. With 2 cats, only needs cleaning every three days or so.

I use scented clumping litter and clean every day.

Pretty much 1 step: scoop clumps.

Hah, though I'm sure he'd enjoy a daily walk, my boy rarely gets it.

100' x 75' back yard, neighbor dog with doggie door in fence, 3 kids under 10 give him 80% of the exercise he needs. He's just a corgi though, not like a greyhound or anything....

I use clumping litter. When I CLEAN the box, I dump all of the litter out, spray it down with a mix of water (70%), bleach (25%), and dishwater soap (5%). Give it a good scrubbing, rinse thoroughly, and put new litter in. I do that ever 2-4 weeks.

If you have a normal sized cat, the Scoop free automatic cat box is the greatest thing ever. That thing works like a charm, and I'd still be using it if our boy didn't grow up to be almost 26 inches long head to butt, and 25 pounds. It was awesome when he was a kitten. Now I just use a jumbo box with regular fresh step litter and scoop it daily, man do I miss that Scoop Free.

Do you clean the waste daily? If not you could do less work...that seems like a lot of bleach too for that kind of job.

Some cats get afraid of them though. They are great for those they work for.

I have 7 cats that live in a 20x20 screened in carpeted porch. About the same size as a 2 car garage. Let them in about 2-3 hours at night 4-5 times a week :)

Two litter boxes changed weekly. Tidy Cat is what I use.
