my maxtor drive acting up!

I can see it in bios, I can see it in disk manager, yet anytime I click it I get a format disk , and it never can format it. I haven't any ideas why it is doing this. I got this drive from a friend and am trying to get it to work, its 80gigs.

any thoughts ?

Try to boot WinXP or something up that will format in something other than Windows. If you have a WinXP CD restart your PC and have it boot from it. If the HDD isn't FUBAR you should be able to format/partion it in the setup.

You can also try the Maxtor MaxBlast utilities to check out the drive for errors. Free from Maxtor's website.

DBSX had the best advice. I would do that before anything else.

ran powermax 4.22 and did the advanced test and in about 30 seconds got error : de63a579

So i will try and RMA the drive and if not, oh well, it was free .
