After making some $ off this good anand forums by selling some RAM and a 40GB HD, i went to my local store to buy a 60GB Maxtor DiamondMax 9 Fluid Dynamic Bearing drive for CDN$135.
After installing it, all i can say IS WOW!! This is indeed a SUPER quiet and SUPER fast drive. On my old Maxtor 5400RPM 40GB Drive, my XP boots in about 30 sec, now with this new maxtor my boot time is slashed to a mere 9sec!!!!! That is an impressive gain. All prog loads faster and it seems that I upgraded a new CPU lol.
Talking about acoustics, KUDOS to maxtor for using Liquid Bearing. In idle mode, the drive is silent w/o any high pitched noise like my old Maxtor or WD drive. My computer is now SUPER quiet even late at nite and I can finally sit down in peace and do my work. Finally i achieved a near silent computer thanks to Maxtor cos before that, the HD is driving me nuts.
I highly recommend this drive to anyone who is upgrading soon.

I've still got an 80GB (one plater) DiamondMAx +9 drive sitting sealed in a box. I picked it up from Staples for $69 (before $20 MIR!). I'm gunna throw it into my HTPC when my new case gets here. Currently I've got a 10GB Maxtor drive in there that is louder than the fans in the system :D So thats great that it'll be much quieter than this other drive.

Wait till you get the DM 9 Plus with 8mb Cache. I have the 120gb version and is faster than my WD SE.

I'm using the 8mb one. But the 2mb is about the same as the 8mb one. They're FAST. :) Transferring huge files might be slower but I'm not complaining. :)

Hasn't this been the case with all Maxtor's? They start off quiet but over a couple months get noisier and noisier? I haven't had one for over a year now so maybe they are better?

It's too early to tell for the new DiamondMax 9 Plus as my drives were manufactured either 1 or 2 months ago. As for the older Maxtor's, I did not have any problem with them at all.

yah now the newer drive dun use ball bearing, they use liquid as a mean to reduce friction so it is much much more reliable and quiet.

Actually with my Maxtor D740X it was loud when new but over time got a lot quieter, maybe it depends on the hard drive you receive, anyway mine`s pretty quiet now.
