Well I did use spark notes, but we spent 2-3 class periods just reading (following along a tape) and my brain was fried
 
I never understood why, if he was capable of running across the country several times back and forth, did he have to wait for the bus to take him to that girl's place.
 
Saw the movie when I was ~10, didn't think much of it. Saw it a few weeks ago again... and wow. Excellent movie

Because he was dumb? The women at the end mentioned that it was only a few blocks away, and if my memory serves me correctly, he ran to her house after that. He was probably given directions by someone "take the number 2 bus to this stop and then take a left" or whatever. Him beign of a lesser mind didn't realise he could deviate from the directions. That's a pretty literal approach to it.
