My mac wont play this movie file

Last night I download a movie on my windows pc i put it on my mac and it was originally a .avi file and when i tried to play it, it said "the movie can not be opened the file is not a movie file" so i changed the file type to .mov just by remaining it and it still wont play anyone know why?

did u install flip4mac and perian ? also do you have vlc installed ? those are 3 things u should always have installed
