I think it's more profitable to NOT have an ER. Honestly, I am surprised that all for-profit hospitals haven't closed theirs already.

did you get the tube? man that sucks when they put it in. I have suffered a collapsed lung 6 times. it fricken hurts

edit: Yeah i would be raising hell about them sending you home without tring to find out why you were in severe pain .

i'm an ER physician. waiting only 20 minutes is a freakin miracle. unfortunately our system is burdened and overwhelmed with the uninsured coming in with their primary care complaints and the aging population and their increasing medical needs.

i'm sorry for your misdiagnosis and glad you are well. i assume your chest tube is out now?

wait til the baby boomer gen doctors phase out. watch hell break loose then.

wait a second, i thought the american health system kicked ass?

compared to the 6 hours it would take in England or Canada and it does kick ass.

Oh bullshit. Trust me, he would have been seen much faster in Canada, and they sure as hell wouldn't misdiagnose him that badly. I couldn't believe he was in a 1st world country when he said he had to wait over an hour (20 minutes wait in the ER + another 45 minutes for the doctor) with a collapsed lung just to see a doctor, then another good 2 hours for emergency surgery. That's insane. Not to mention he isn't going to be receiving a 5-10K bill here.

But keep believing the American system is better~. Whatever the FDA tells you🙂. I actually had non-emergency surgery a few days ago, went very smoothly and no out of pocket expense .

his visit is very bad also not common.

that hospital sucks. though the misdiagnose of the collapsed lung is common them sending him home BEFORE they read the x-ray is very odd.

do not take his visit as typical. i know damn well it is not.

It probably isn't. If it was there would be a heck of a lot more lawsuits.

My problem is the American population's belief that Canada's system would have kept him waiting 6+ hours with a collapsed lung, and that the American healthcare system is tons better when he would have had his collpased lung diagnosed and surgery quite a bit faster in Canada then he did at that hospital.

it would depend on which hospital in Canada wouldn't it?

Sure, but unless you were in a remote area with the lone hospital already under stress, emergency room and surgery wait times in moderatly to densly populated areas are very similar in both Canada and the US.

The problem with Canada's healthcare system comes from long wait lists on specific and specialized non-emergency surgery where there may only be one CAT scan machine for a county. On issues like that, the US is quite a bit better.

Well, it all depends on what hospital and such. Don't go turning this into a US vs Canada health care thing becasue one persons experience is not a good basis. Personally I have been to the emergency room several times and was always treated promtly. I had asthma attacks when i was 3 and 5 and got attention pretty much immediately. When i was ~12 I hit my head and was bleeding like crazy and had to wait probably half an hour, but that was no big deal becasue the blood clotted after 10 minutes and I was jsut waiting to get stitches to keep the wound closed (ended up getting 3 staples into the skull 😛). I also did go one time when I was 17 with real bad pain in my left side, and was treated promptly, but it was apparently just a bruised rib and not anything serious (which is the trouble with chest pain and stuff, there are SO many things it can be that you never know if its heart burn or a heart attack). It is really hard to blame a doctor or ER for a misdiagnosis seeing as so many things have the same symptoms, and they have to try to prioritize cases in some manor. You were probably just unlucky in that cases which seemed more serious were comming in and you were getting bumped ack in line (although the sending you home before the X-ray is kinda dumb, but at least they called you back promtly).

thanks for being a man and not trying to sue.

I'm a dork like that, my friends were telling me to sue but i told them:

#1: i'm still alive with no problems
#2: i like to earn my money the "normal" way...of course had something actually happened to me that caused permanent injury to me all bets are off.

When awarding damages in a lawsuit, the plaintiff is allowed to be made whole again, and that's it. That is to say, unless them missing the x-ray and taking too long to see you caused you some sort of injury or damage that you can prove, you have nothing to sue over.

You have to show that the extra time and missed X-Ray caused you harm. Your lung was already collapsed, and did not become "more" collapsed or lead to further complications because of the extra time. That does not appear to be the case here, at least so far.

Btw, the hospital has copies of every single piece of paper they gave you, and much much more. Under the Federal HIPAA act, you are entitled to all of your medical records. Just contact their medical record department and request your records.

You should be able to get the records if you ask for them. Thankfully they finally did look at the xray and you're still alive and neffing 😉

Basically, send a letter comdeming the neglect you faced to the hospital adminsitrators.

For those of you who have had a collapsed lung -- i'm guessing it's happened multiple times? Seems like if happens once to you, it will happen again. 🙁

How far apart were they? A few years apart? I'm kind of worried...to the person that asked, yeah they put a chest tube in...it was not fun and I hope it never happens again...
