Today I got home, all excited because my new Duron 800 and Asus A7V133 had arrived, and I'd finally have some new gaming hardware to play with.
I got home and unboxed the package, and examined all the contents... one of the first things I did was check out the OEM cpu to make sure everything was kosher. I was going to overclock this Duron, so I figured I'd take a look at the L1 bridges later and estimate what kind of job it would be.
Everything else checked out, so I sat down under a good light to look at the L1 bridges. There was a rubberband around the processor to keep it firmly attached to some anti-static foam that the pins rested in. When I looked at the L1 bridges, I had to look 2-3 times to make sure I wasn't seeing things... they were already connected at the factory!
It was at this point that I questioned whether OEM Duron 800s came from the factory this way now, even though I hadn't read any reports confirming something like this going on.
So I went ahead and took the rubber band from the cpu... and Lo and Behold, it was a 1.2GHz Athlon TBird!!!!!.
Talk about luck... I'm super-happy and on cloud 10 at this point, and just had to share my good fortune. I checked my receipt and saw that I was only charged for a Duron 800 and the Asus I had purchased.
A blind hog finds an acorn every once in a while, I guess.
