so i both love and hate logitech. they seems to make good hardware but their software is horrid. here's the story of two logitech products and their epic fail at software, specifically x64 software.
I bought a g930 headset a couple months ago. i did the usual research on it before hand and while i was aware that some were having issues, i didnt think too much of it and chalked it up to just being user's odd configurations or something. i get the headset home, install the latest drivers from their website and when i go to plugin the usb stick receiver, i get a vc++ runtime error. crap. search the logitech forums and see this being an issue others have had but no solutions, just suggestions of installing vc++ manually, etc. i do all that, install vc++ from MS, every version i can find (keep in mind i already have about 15 versions installed from various games), try different usb ports. eventually, i go to the lcore.exe file, the one causing the error, and click the compatibility tab and give it admin rights. headset can be plugged in and no error. finally. downside, the logitech gaming software wont autoload with windows cuz this setting causes a UAC prompt. not a huge issue but annoying. also annoying? the surround sound and headset buttons stop working after a reboot forcing me to reinstall the software everytime i boot the computer.
i format my machine a week later due to a new SSD install. this time around, i dont need to give it admin rights cuz it magically works fine without the vc++ errors though the reboot issue is still there.
as if i wanted more punishment, this past weekend i bought a g700 mouse. again, did research and didnt see many problems (no where near the issues the g930 seemed to be having) and this uses setpoint instead of the LGS. i have setpoint on my other machine for a bluetooth mouse/keyboard and no issues. so i plug in the stupidly small wireless receiver and bam, vc++ runtime error is back. yes, plugging in this usb receiver caused the LGS to throw an error. i havent even installed setpoint yet. i tried moving to different usb ports for both the mouse and headset to no avail. leaving the mouse unplugged, the headset is find and no error. LGS was updated a couple weeks ago so i attempted to use that. installed, no help. knowing from past experience how to get around it, i go to lcore.exe and give it admin rights and all is well, i can have the headset and mouse both plugged in. i install setpoint (rather the gaming version of setpoint specific to this mouse) and it cant detect it. forums suggsest what? oh give it admin rights too. i do that and it works.
so now i have two logitech apps, LGS and setpoint, and both require admin rights to work correctly. wtf? how does this crap get past QA? on the plus side, the LGS update i tried out seems to have resolved the reboot issue. so now after a reboot i just have to manually launch both apps and accept the UAC prompt for each. could be worse i suppose.
if the hardware wasnt awesome, both these products would be returned. the headset is great; sounds good in surround (games) and stereo (music), the wireless is awesome and allows me to get up from time to time and not have to take the headset off, comfortable and the build quality is good. the mouse is the most comfortable mouse i have used. i had a mx518 for years and changed it out for a deathadder a couple months ago. the razer is nice but just wasnt as comfy. this g700 feels like it was made for my hands (i have large hands and a palm grip).
so after all this headache, im still happy with the hardware but geeze is the software buggy. it seems most users having issues on the logitech forums are win7 x64 users, not exactly a niche OS at this point. you'd think they would have some ability to get x64 software working correctly especially since both these products have been out in the market for a year. would i recommend either of these products? if you have the patience to deal with the software issues, then yes, i would recommend either.
