I finally took the chance and replaced the battery. It survived the op, though as the replacement battery registers as full, I guess I'll run it down to begin with.

I'm still using MX-518s and they are working fine. I have a backup one as well. Why today's gaming mice look so blocky and ridiculous and inferior to the MX500 series... also I prefer optical to laser.

Why optical over laser?

I'm glad I fixed mine, it seems silly to cough out about £50 for an equivalent replacement mouse when it can be fixed for £10. It's done pretty well over the years, the only thing that's a bit rickety now is the switch for hyper-scrolling and traditional mouse scroll style, but when I'm playing that kind of game I just switch to a spare wired mouse anyway.

My Microsoft Sidewinder X5 has functioned for years. Also have a Logitech G400.
