My local movie theater charges $2 for adults, $1 for kids

wow, I didn't realize that it was so cheap. Appearently, years ago, a bunch of people got together and renovated (quite nicely) the local movie theater and operate it as a not for profit business. Appearently the admission fees cover mainentance, wages, and the costs to bring the movies. Reasonably prices consessions too.

It's a single movie theater (in a town of 7500).
current schedule of movies for July include Madagascar, Star Wars3, Mr and Mrs Smith, and Batman Begins.

such a relief from the chain theater 20 miles away that charges $8 for admission and more than that for popcorn and a soda

I have a 14-screen theatre in my city that's VERY nice (just as nice as the new ones) that charges $1.50 for "just outta theatres" movies.

Like "Honeymooners", "Kicking & Screaming", etc. Movies like 1-2 months outta mainstream theatres for $1.50.

I only see movies I REALLY wanna see for full price, otherwise I wait to go there.

Lucky you. A non-matinee showing of a movie here now costs $9.00 for an adult. They demolished the old theater and built a new Regal Cinemas, and swore time and again that ticket prices would not be raised. That was many price-jacks ago, and the matinee price is now almost up to the old non-matinee price. The junk food costs more, too.

They are playing at least a few weeks off the national break so they get much better rental terms.

and studios wonder why attendance is down. not to mention that i see commercials. COMMERCIALS. before the feature film when i go to the big chain movie theatres here (marcus)

Attendance is down so much because of all the crappy film out.

It got up to $13.50 a ticket here for a while, but people stopped going (guy takes his family out for a movie and popcorn and it costs him $100), so they lowered it down again. I think it's $9 for a regular movie now.

That and the average high school kid has to work eight hours just to take his date to the movies.

Movie theaters aren't for the rich, traditionally

$9.50 to $10.75 in the city, dependent upon theatre company. Nearly all do not offer a matinee price break of any kind (full price, all the time).

I'd say that overall ticket prices are slghtly overpriced, by maybe a $1 or so. The weak release slate is still primarily to blame.

The reson for inflated concession prices is that the stuidos take the lion's share of the box office and that ratio has steadily increased over the years.

I use to go to Laurelhurst theatre(portland) all the time back in the '80s. Paid $1.50 for 2 movies. I think it's $3 now and 21 and over.

That sucks. We don't even have competition, only one theater. There were two for a while, but both were owned by the same company. Next nearest movie theater is a few hundred kilometers away.

sigh, i used to pay $6-$8 for tickets in texas, and movie tickets up in delaware cost $9.75 at the local regal and cinemark theaters

That certainly is one ancillary benefit - the city does offer a venerable plethora of choices, including a number of IMAX options. Also, often you can find flyers or surveyors giving away free admission to foreign/documentary/art/etc films.

Have to agree having no choice at a high price is certainly much worse than many high priced choices.
