I will state now that I personally have not seen this problem yet but I don't believe he would lie to me about his computer since he uses it to play games.

He says that 5-20mins into games OpenGL and D3D the screen will go "weird" aka scramble and then go tie-dye. He then has to restart the computer. This only happens in games. The other day I went over there, pulled the card, dusted it and the computer, made sure the fan worked, and updated to the latest drivers. I had to leave so I didn't see him play any games but appearently that did not fix the problem. The reason I have narrowed it down to the GF4 is because he old GF2 works flawlessly. The card is a Gainward GF4 Ti4200. He got it back in August so I don't know if its still under warrenty. Any ideas or suggestions would be much appreciated(sp?). Sorry for any misspellings. If you need any more info let me know.

MSI KT3 mobo(possibly the Ultra edition, I can't remember)
256MB Mushkin PC2400
Linksys nic card
Gainward 64MB GF4 Ti4200
60GB Ibm HD
WinXP Pro
DirectX 9
Latest WHQL Cert Nvidia drivers, I know its 40.xx but I don't know what the xx is.

Thank You for your time and help,
J. and his lil brother

No, and I don't think its a cooling isssue because I upgraded the fans in his case a week or 2 ago.

Although he said this problem started around the time his old case fans were breathing their last breath and that his systemmonitor's heat alarm used to go off. Maybe one day it just got too hot. But I replaced all 3 of his case fans and upgraded the cpu fan and the computer hasn't overheated again.

Gainwards have the problem. Its known. RMA it they will replace it no problem. The problem is caused by transisters that were faulty. The screen is said to turn "rainbow" when playing a 3d application. I am certian this is the problem.

What he said, sometimes called a checkerboard pattern or pink screen of death.

Yah.. I got a Gainward ti 4200 and lucky for me the card started
freaking out after the first 24hours. I was not happy about this
because I loved the other Gainward cards. Anyway, I got one
of those Asylume cards this time and it's also a pretty good card.

Yeah I had the exact same problem with my card around a month ago. I called Gainward got an rma number, shipped it off, and 4 days later, a new card came. Im glad that some companies still have good customer service. Good luck.
