My Linksys WRT54G version 5 is bad..I think I have a solution!

This router has been returned 3 times, 3 new routers and it still freezes and locks up, so I have a Dell computer full tower case sitting here with 4 hard drives, and 2 CD drives, running on a p4 2.8ghz with a gig of ram. I was curious as to if there is a program like smooth wall that I could run so I could totaly cut off the silly router because it freezes all of the time and I am done dealing with it. I have a 8 port switch I will hook up for all of my computers to hook into, then hook up into the Server(the dell in question), then have the cable modem hook into the server and have it rout the cable via the DHCP that is installed with Windows 2003 server that I have gotten and installed on the server. Is it possible to have it all work like that then from the switch have the Wireless router hook intot he switch and have wireless for my laptops still? Would this be smarter then this router? I like it to just work with the hardware, but its just not anymore. Linksys really needs to fix this problem. I also am thinking of making a domain on the server and file hosting on it too, is that all worth it? any opinions?! There are 5 desktop computers in my house and 3 laptops.

call linksys customer support, and they will replace it with a version 3 or 4. I did this with three V5 that I got. You will need to pay to ship it to them, but that is all.

Edit: Yes, that is a typical win2k3 gateway setup. It will do the dhcp part, turn off the dhcp server in the wireless router. I'd still get a replacement router from linksys though🙂

which version should I prefer from them?

what number should I call?

I still like this idea though, any thoughts on it?

sweet, I think I'll do that (only try and get them to pay for shipping...why should I pay twice to get a working product?)

I have 2 V5's. The one is just as an AP and is fine, but sucks as a router. other is reset at least once a day.

it is up to them, they ship a refurbed one in a white box. I got two 3's and a 4.
Edit: I sent them back because they absolutely would not retain a static WAN IP after a reboot.
If the power failed, you were down till you went in and reset that IP and commited the change. Fat lot of good that was, if I was 50 miles away🙁

That is a typical win2k3 gateway/server setup. I don't like that route, it is putting all your eggs in one basket, server-wise.
I prefer either a firmware appliance for the routing and firewall duties, or a unix box. What can I say, I am just a unix fanboi🙂😛 It only takes about a P2 with 128 MB of ram to do the trick.
I'd put the 2k3 server behind it on the LAN.

thats what I thought, but what program should I use to route it...just toss on smooth wall on a smaler system? I have a p4 1.5ghz sitting around here 🙂.

Egads, don't you get the hint?😛

a P2 or P3 with a 6 gig disk and 128 MB is plenty🙂
smoothwall is one solution.
SME server is another.
IPcop has one. They brag about built in IDS.

You could build one from scratch, using openbsd and PF, or freebsd, or, or.......
