Man, it was one week short of 8 years ago when I ordered the Linksys EG005W v2.0 Gigabit 5-Port Switch from Newegg. The sucker just up and died a few hours ago. I had a customer come by to pick up their pc and the thing just went black. No lights. Dead. Bummer. That thing was a tank. Sigh.

Can anyone recommend something in an 8-port switch that is of similar quality? I want this thing to have lots of connections and have a solid build. I am willing to pay for quality.

I've been using a metal-encased TrendNet 8-port Gig switch for what seems like nearly six years, without any issues. I replaced it with a brand-new identical switch just recently during diagnosing some network issues, but it turned out not to be the switch.

I also have had good luck with the Trendnet switches I have owned. Only issue I have had is that the "Green" feature sometimes makes them a little finicky with longer runs and or not tolerant of poorly constructed cables. That may not even be factor for you.

I took your guys advice and went with the TrendNet switch. Say hello to the TEG-S80Dg!

I like that the switch is metal and solidly built. Installation was pretty straight forward. I got the model with the built in power convertor so I don't have the brick at the end of the power cable. Plug in cables and it works. The only issue I have is that my the file server is not showing full duplex speeds on the front indicators. I am using the onboard NIC (Realtek RTL8112B) on the Foxconn motherboard. Is that a crap chip? I have an Intel NIC that I can pop in if necessary. I'm using a six foot CAT6 cable to connect the file server so I don't think that would be the problem. I will probably test tomorrow evening if I am not too tired.

I opened up the Linksys switch just to see the guts. No physical sign of failure.
