As a lot of you know, I broke my neck diving in 1999. I'm a C6 quadriplegic, and will always be. My bills went up to over a million dollars, all paid by my dads health insurance. I sued the homeowners insurance, which is why its there, for what the policy was worth; which was $300k minus lawyer fees. I receive about $1k/mo from it, and will for 70 or so years. It pays for the sh!t like co-pays and supplies so I can live. I also pay for my van so I can move forward in life. As soon as the mods are done, I'm going to college.
My father's health ins has switched companies within the last year. The old company had no problem with the settlement, and never asked for a dime (no, I don't have that in writing). Had I known, there would have been an agreement in the suit to pay them.
I got a new power wheelchair in August. Before the hospital (Shriners) ordered it, they filed for and received insurance approval for it. I have that chair now. Somewhere along the line, some idiot wrote in the orders that my injury was the result of an automobile accident. As a result, ins declines payment, and sends me a letter instructing me to contact my auto carrier for payment. WTF? We call to straighten it out, and the woman asks how it happened. She then asks if there was a settlement. Was there an arrangement to pay medical? No, I answer?there was never a reason to. I?m thinking I may have to eat the $22,000 bill for the chair. Don?t I wish.
I get a letter today requesting me to sign a paper agreeing to repay EVERY CENT THEY?VE EVER PAID. I need to sign it, have it notarized, and then put a bullet in my head I guess. That?s like $1.2mil. Hell, I can?t even pay $300k. I?ve been receiving it for three years, minus lawyer fees, and a down payment for this dump of a house in which I can't even fit into the bathroom without loads of help.
No job, one semester of one college class, no extra income. I?m royally screwed. I?ll be calling lawyers ASAP to sort my options; I sure hope there are a few. I wish it killed me, I seriously do right now. I?ve mentally handled my disability like nothing ever happened, ask anyone here that knows me?but whew?I dunno now. You?ve got to be a millionaire to get sick in this world.
Thanks for hearing my rant?AT kept me sane (believe it or not) in the past years. I was bedridden from June 2000 to April 2002 recovering from skin breakdown, and all I did was sit in my hospital room on my laptop pulling down AT at 20k, and it was good. So, thanks. I?ll post updates.
As for cliffs notes, I typed this on an on-screen keyboard with a trackball? That?s what you?re gettin
