My life hangs in the balance....

The stress level is through the roof. My girlfriend is a 4th year med student... for those of you who don't know... before you can go out into the world, make tons of money and pay it out to the insurance companies... you have to go through a multi-year residency(slavery) program.

The procedure for figuring out what residency you get into is called the MATCH. During this process you interview at a whole bunch of hospitals, and rank them in order of preference. The hospitals then rank their interviewees int he order they would like them.

An algorithm processes these lists from all the med students, taking into account couples programs, and attempting to push people towards their first choice.

If you fail to match you do whats called "scrambling" where a list of all hospitals with vacancies post-match is posted, and you call frantically and set yourself up a residency.

Once you either match or succesfully scramble you find yourself in a 3 year binding contract.

My girlfriend's rank list is as follows. Including metro area

1. University of Chicago (Chicago)
2. Emory University (Atlanta)
3. St Christophers Hospital (Philladelphia)
4. DC Childrens Hospital (Wash DC)
5. Rainbow Babies Hospital (Cleveland)
6. Brown University (Providence)
7. Cincinnati Childrens Hospital (Cincinnati)
8. Fairfax Hospital (Wash DC)
9. Dupont Hospital (Dupont)
10. University of Maryland (Baltimore)
11. Loyola University (Chicago)
12. RUSH University (Chicago)
13. Eastern VA College (VA Beach)

We found out today: She matched.

I find out Thursday where she matched.

This is the love of my life... I will make it work... I'm praying she lands one of the DC/Baltimore area hospitals. I'm so incredibly stressed and anxious about this whole thing I can't even think about anything else.

How mobile are you?

Define mobile... I have a fantastic job doing what I love... so it won't be an easy process... I have an excellent resume, and a security clearance... so I should be ok finding another job almost anywhere (Cincinatti and Cleveland I'm worried about).

I don't own any property yet... so other than the job... pretty mobile I suppose.

would you take your baby to a hospital called Rainbow Babies Hospital?

no! they'd mix up pinks and blues, and i'd lose my baby 🙁.

Max, i'm sure it'll work out

It'll be stress almost unimaginable to most people. I can tell, though, that you're committed to this person despite what may happen, that will get her, and you, through a lot.

Sounds like a supersized version of what vi_edit just went through.

It will be fine! Not to worry.

Good luck with that man. Remember, if she really is the love of your life...it will be worth the move. I'm sure you will have no problem finding a job wherever you go (just don't expect it to be as good as your current if you really love your current job).

why is it a big deal if you have to move? if you love her, then suck it up and move.

Oh yeah... sure no big deal. Not like getting married and moving across the country is any major life changing event or anything.

:disgust:
