My Liberty gets better mgp at 85mph than 70mph?

First off, I had a good weekend. :)

Ok, on my way back up to college Sunday, I timed myself on how long it took me to get from Rochester to Duluth. Its ~240 miles (according to mapquest) and I did it in under 3 hours . Now for all you speed dicks out there, I was going 85-90 mph all the way up. The route I took was: Hw 52 (60mph) up to the St. Paul. Then I took North 35E (70mph) all the way up to Duluth.

Some of you might remember me from a thread I made earlier about getting a Jeep Liberty. Well, on the way down from college, I got roughly 19mpg going speed limit, ac off and the wind was going sideways (not with or against the car). When I was home, I changed the spark plugs. On the way back up I was going 85-90mph through the whole trip. 3/5 of 18.5 gallons is 11.1 gallons for 240miles = 21.62mpg. Thats with AC and the wind against the Jeep. Now your going to say, well it must be the spark plugs were bad, and it probably was. But getting 21.6 mpg for a SUV at 85mph is pritty good.

Oh on a side note, I was listening to the radio and heard something which might svck for some of you: On weekends, at the Mall of America, you must be accompanied by an adult 21+ if your are 14 years old or younger after 4:00pm, you must be atleast 16 or older to be alone.. What confuses me is what if your 15? It doesnt say anything about being 15.

As immature as many members here are, I don't think there are too many 14 year olds in these parts..

Also, why were you being stupid and risking your life and others at such speeds?

I drove down to Rochester from St. Paul (well, actually, Canada..) this weekend, so I was going to opposite way you were. There was a *brutal* wind from the south-south east.. that was probably really helping you out on your northward leg.
*edit spelling*

Thats slow, me and my dad go out to a race track near Chicago 2 times a year and see who gets the fastest time. I usually lose because Im not as good with a manual as he is, but we generally top out at 130mph (fast) on the track. Granted theres a difference between a M3 and a Liberty, the Liberty can handle 85mph.

And Im not the only one going that fast, people actually pass me...

The thing is, from North 35E (turns into North 35), there were more bursts of wind that went sideways than with the car but ya there some some wind that helped. North 35 also goes north-north east, so its going against some wind.

How did you determine how much gas you used? By your 3/5 calculation, it sounds like you just looked at the gas guage [edit: it's actually horribly inaccurate*]? That's not terribly accurate. Starting out full and filling up when you get there is more accurate, but also not completely accurate (close enough for government work though)

* case in point, my old car - IIRC, I got about 90-100 miles between the top pin and the F line, another 150+ miles between the F line and the 1/2 line, and only 100 miles or so between the 1/2 line and E.

And how are they going to know if a kid is 14 as opposed to 15 anyway? They wouldn't have any ID.

my guess is you can't be alone at 15 but you can be with someone who is 16+.

Maybe its a little fast for a Jeep, but any care made in the last 20 years can handle those speeds without any problem. I drive that fast on the HW as well, and faster.

Its the slow drivers, doing 70 in a 75, that are risking lives

Next time start out with a full tank and when you get close to home fill up again and see how much it takes to fill up so you can get a better idea of how much gas you used exactly

Say that to the early 90's corolla I learned to drive in. I couldn't hit 65 without the car vibrating dangerously.

And where is the speed limit 75?

EDIT: And I'd say for you to say any car, it'd have to be something that initally cost more then 15k within the last 10 and was properly maintained.

Larger vehicles tend to get better gas mileage at higher speeds. Think about a small remote controled car that's like 12 inches long. 60mph would be extremely fast for that car and it would have to work really hard to maintain that speed (if it even could). The speed where it gets optimal gas mileage would be much lower.

Kidding, right? I reguarly do over 90 on the interstate. The problem is the slow drivers that merge without looking -- I'm a very defensive driver and have never had a single wreck due to speeding on the interstate -- or a wreck on the interstate period. In Europe pretty much everyone was doing over 90mph... didn't see a single accident.
