my last shot before sending this HD back to Maxtor

One of my machines was dual booting 2k server and XP. Earlier this evening I decided to throw the latest Mandrake (8.2) in the mix. I first resized my C to make room for 'nix (4 Gigs) the install went well..then all heck broke loose, to make a long story short this HD appears to be toast. I downloaded Maxtors Low Level Format utility but if this HD is plugged in I cannot even boot to a floppy. I tried to format using a XP install disk, Mandrake and a 98 boot disk but eventually my system hangs. I tried with another HD I had laying around and it works fine. I tried slaving this drive on one of my other systems but it doesn't recognize the drive at all.
