Ok, I had a feeling that it was overheating...It'd shutdown if I tried to do windows update or run sisoftware sandra. So I installed MBM5 and sure enough, I would see jumps from 42C up to 60C just for webbrowsing!!!! Then I closed the laptop to let it hibernate and I opened it up a few hours later and there's a msg that it reached 72C!!!!!! WHILE HIBERNATING!!!! Crazy, indeed!

So could I open this sucker up and modify the cooling or is this a big no-no?

Dont know that I would trust those readings
especially if it is a Pentium you are running
They have thermal protection i think it would have
shut it self down if were getting that hot

Wouldn't that kind of lead you to believe that that is the cause of it shutting down whenever I try to do something intensive? And also how it will shutdown after putting it in hibernate (failed to mention that, but I hear that a lot of laptops suffer from this).

When I try to do anything, the readings go sky high. And the fact that it read 70C is amazing...Something is definately "not normal".

I suppose so but i didn't read anywhere in your original post that said it shuts off by itself when you do something intensive.

Oh. I'm so sorry. I had every intent to include that, that was the man reason of me posting! Doh!!!!

Yes, it shuts down even when trying to run windows update to update to SP1 and so on! I downloaded 3dmark2001 for sh!tz and giggles. and after recieving like 12FPS in the 640x480 lol@onboard video...I came out and BAAM! 79C! Just after pointing my mouse ovewr the MBM5 systray icon, it shuts down. That's just wrong, if you ask me. And I even make a duct out of an 80MM and a little plastic container so that it's pull more air out!

No sweat.
I assume its out of warranty.
If so i guess you've gotnothing to lose opening it up. Cause those temps are not doing any good.
Could just be loaded with dust on the fan/fans

Blast some compressed air thru the intake fan, it it's an older laptop it probably has a few dustbunnies living in there before you take it apart.
