If anyone has had this problem before please give me advice on what to do... I have a gateway laptop PII that literally smoked when I plugged it in to work on it. After that it would not power up anymore. Anyone knows what happened? how to fix this? and where to get it fixed? Please advise me! I really need to get this thing going.. Thanks....

I'd imagine that the power supply somehow died... I've never really dealt with laptops before but if it doesn't have a warranty left on it, things could get expensive to fix/replace...

I don't know though, I'm far from an expert in the laptop field, I just imagine that's what happened to it anyways.

That would be my first guess also. Laptops can be a pain to work on and can get expensive real fast. I would probably get a power supply off ebay if it isn't under warranty still.

I wouldn't, faster lappys than your's are going for 3-350$ in the FS/FT forum and having your's repaired will most likely cost as much as it's worth, and that's presuming that only the PSU is bad and that if it is the problem that it didn't take the board or anything else with it! In the end a lappy that old with problems is more economical to replace 9/10 times IMO and you can recover the data off your HDD if it isn't nuked.

Yea, I'd vote for a replacement laptop, just picked one up the other day at the compaq (HP) factory outlet here in houston... it was a Duron 1.1GHz, 256MB RAM, 20GB HDD, DVD drive and 14in screen for $699....... the old one is not worth fixing

just go and get a harddrive adapter to plug that 2.5" harddrive into a standard IDE cable (their like $5) and you can recover any needed files easily onto a desktop system.

Yep.. as with most electronic devices, once you let the factory-installed smoke out the item is dead.

LOL networkman! I had a Sony Vaio lappy puff "factory installed" smoke six weeks after the warranty expired. I was able to rescue the data on the HDD (2.5" to 3.5" adapter $5.30 at local computer show) I found a replacement laptop on eBay for $465 with faster CPU and sold the burned Sony for parts and got $180 on eBay. My client was thrilled!
