My laptop search

Hi,

I'm looking for the most powerful and functional laptop I can get that is:
a) less than AU$4000 [$US 3200] but preferably around the AU$3000 mark. I think that's about $US 2400
b) less than 1.8 kg (4 lb). I want a light one, cos I will be carting it about the place all day long.

It will be a work laptop, I'm not interested in games and that sort of thing.

I'm not too keen on IBMs. I don't know why, they just don't do it for me. Sorry, I can see that some of you are big IBM fans.

Currently I'm looking at the ASUS M5200N, and the Sony Viao S VGNS28GP. They both fit the criteria, but I haven't looked at many others. Does anyone have any feedback on these models, or any others you could suggest?

any help would be greatly appreciated

thanks, Richie

From what i hear and have seen sonys are just a large pain in the rear so if those 2 are the ones you are choosing from i would go with the asus.

Thanks dude. I'm not really lmiting myself to those two, I have just not really looked properly at other yet. Any recommendations?

also, what do you reckon about tablet PCs? is the technology up to scratch, or would I just kick myself in 6 months time? Which are the good tablet PCs? The Fujitsu Lifebook T4010, for instance, is about the same price as the Sony. I think a tablet PC would be really useful. I am a consultant, and so I spend a lot of time taking notes.

But I'm not sure
a) how practical it is,
b) how sturdy it is (the swivel screen thing looks a bit flimsy) and
c) how future-proof it is (emerging technology and all...)

any advice?

for the answers to those questions, it might be a good idea to see if you can find one in a store and test it out hands-on. i

problem is, there are none in Australia. They said they can order one if I want to buy it, but I'm gonna have to take a gamble it would seem.

That is a problem. Another problem in Australia is that laptops seem to cost a little more than in the US (that's my experience anyway). And if you're in Perth, well, you're pretty well got the short end of the stick (that's where I am).
Have you ever considered Apple? They make some nice notebooks in that range that are very functional, and you can get Office 2k4 with the notebook view in Word that takes notes from the microphone (I haven't tried it, but apparently it's good). Have a look at http://www.apple.com.au/powerbook/. They weigh more than 2kg though.
I heard that Sony's can be quite dodgy, but they are light.

Thanks Randumb. I've had a look round on the internet and can't find the S6231. Is it sa variation on the S6000?

far out! that's a really useful website. Thanks! What's the best tablet PC on the market for less than $US 3200?😀

can't say. over here those tablet laptops havent really caught on. i think there is little demand for them. i think i remember toshiba coming out with one, but thats all i remember.
