Dont know what to make of your post/question. Are you saying the screen surface physically cracked or that it just looks that way? I dont believe your story if you say that it just physically cracked (broken window) on its own just sitting there. That it looks cracked or like a broken window is an insufficient description.
If you impacted the display enough to crack the front panel glass then air gets in and contaminates the active display elements.
It's possible if you consistantly close the lid pulling it closed using the corner of the screen than using 2 hands or closing from the center.
If the frame/chasis for your lid is not structurally sound, when opening and closing it can cause uneven stress on the screen. Though most of the screens are plastic so I don't see how they can break that way unless there was a force impacting the screen itself.
I did have a user that had her Thinkpad screen crack while the laptop was in the overhead bin of an airplane.
And. a screen can be cracked in a padded case if subjected to undue pressure. Example, in a backpack case, rolling your shoulders forward can pull on the sides of the pack as if trying to force the case into a curvature.
