My laptop is a "pseudo" Centrino...

Long story short, bought a T40 that is like a Centrino - has the P-M CPU and the right chipset motherboard. It could have had the Intel 2200B/G whatever network card but instead came with a different manufacturer wifi card. As a result, it doesn't come officially w/the sticker.

eBay has a sticker for $5 and free ship. Should I just splurge for the hell of it?

Centrino means built-in wifi, among two other main points. It's not centrino without built-in. Besides, Intel is VERY strict on those stickers. You should notify eBay about the sticker. Intel would SH|T BRICKS if they knew someone was selling them.

Hmm.. why?

The stickers don't do anything other than get in the way. They slowly peel, leaving glue residue to get smeared everywhere and collect dirt and dust that can bunch up and come off in clumps later, only to get stuck in the notebook. They're tacky. They feel uncomfortable on against the skin. They don't actually DO anything. It's like free advertising for Intel and Microsoft for other people to go OOOO LOOK HE GOT ONE THEM FOLDIN COMPUTARZ COOL LEMME SEE LEMME SEE

I guess, but the wifif is still part of the system, just IBM's dual-band a/b instead of just Intel's b.

Stickers for many kinds of CPUs have been around and sold online for years. I find it hard to believe that Intel is not aware, and find it even harder to believe that they would care.

Yes. Yes you should. That way, when I see your laptop, and that sticker, I will still not care.

It doesn't matter. The wifi has to be built in to the motherboard for it to qualify as centrino.

Intel and Microsoft both require keeping the case badges and stickers under lock and key. Before systems can be fitted with proper Intel case badges, there's a small utility on a thumb drive that gets plugged in and qualifies the system. Why would Intel go to those lengths if they didn't care?

How would people get away with freely selling them online if Intel AND Microsoft cared so much.

Ok, lets put this another way. I agree they care about what stickers go on retail computers when they are sold to the public. But what do they care if some "PC Ricer" buys a sticker online cause he thinks its cool.

I think you should buy 10-15 of the stickers and put them everywhere on the laptop.

That makes sense.

You wouldn't buy and slap on an AMD sticker on a non-AMD based laptop. So why would you buy and slap on a centrino sticker to put on a non-centrino laptop?

or would you?

It doesn't matter. The wifi has to be built in to the motherboard for it to qualify as centrino.

Actually that's not the case.

Centrino is a three part package - Pentium M, chipset, and wi-fi product. Intel wi-fi is typically provided in the form of a mini PCI card, many vendors offer alternative cards for people who want a lower cost/higher feature set. It is not built into the motherboard in any way, & can be removed like any mini PCI device.

A non intel Wi-fi card will lose you the "Centrino" title but who gives a flying crap. I can't stand stickers. You can have the Centrino sticker off of mine if you want it.

I actually peeled the Pentium-M sticker off my laptop soon after I got it because it was right where I would rest my palm, and it irritated me. I can't think of a worse place to put those stickers.

But how, you might ask, will other people know it's a Pentium-M?

The easy answer to that is that I don't care.

Thanks, that's what I was trying to say but my right hand just had surgery so I can't type that much. It has wifi, just not intel branded wifi.

and, therefore, it does not qualify for the centrino label.

are you sure it is not intel brand? for intel makes the wireless mini pci card for ibm and ibm only use their own intel brand minipci card. the other brands won't work on a thinkpad.
