Even when doing regular work, i.e not only during gaming it gets so hot at the bottom you can't touch. I'm pretty sure its also not that good for "the guys"...

How about some config details? CPU, HDD, RAM, Model and make, and especially - how you use it. (Where do you put it, and is it on battery or A/C?)

Welcome to Anandtech forum, Firefox..if you put your laptop on your bed mattress, it might get hot. Put on hard surface like glass or wood table allows laptop vents under the laptop fan the heat out.

I'm using Dell Inspiron E1505 with C2D T7200 and ATI x1400 with 2GB of ram.
I use it mainly on a table but sometimes also on my laps. It gets very hot underneath as well as the keyboard which can cause my hands to sweat.

Basic rule - laptops really are not designed for use on laps - that can block cooling vents. If the lap is a must, use a tray.

It is also a good idea to suck out extraneous dust and dirt by placing a vacuum crevice tool against the notebook's cooling vent. Don't blow into it - you will just force the dirt farther inside the case.

Bwahahaha!

I swear... we must be solemates... or twins separated at birth! :D

I use a nylon cutting board underneath my lappy when I put it on my lap!

Sure, it gets hot, but at least I KNOW air is getting to the CPU... ;)

My wife hates this, BTW!

She has 3 cutting boards, so who cares?!?!?!?

I have the same laptop as you and I dont think its very well designed. I am mostly worried about the hard drive, which never seems to go below 50C. In fact, the temps seem to hover near 60C under heavy/moderate use. I actually had to manually build a external fan which injects cold air in the PCMCIA slot above the drive to bring the temps down by 10-15C so that the temps would be under the hard drive manufacturer's limit. The laptop still gets fairly warm underneath, but atleast I wont have to worry about the hard drive prematurely dying.
The CPU, memory, GPU all get up to 60C, but I wouldnt worry about that because those are solid state components and are pretty much indestructible (as long as your not severely overheating them).

I recently bought two Dell Inpiron 1501 laptops, one for myself and one for my wife, and for some reason mine seems to get hot as hell as well. What I have noticed is:

- Even using the battery on low power consumption with the wifi off, the right side, where the hard drive is located gets extremely hot.
- The heat is worse with the AC Adapter in, with the battery in or out of the computer.
- The battery itself is always cool.

And most importantly,

- It seems that the computer was designed to use the hard drive as a heatsink!!

I looked up a picture of the motherboard on the internet and it seems that there aren't any heat sinks on the power regulators, nor given the location of the northbridge, is there any vented heatsink for it either. That is a huge oversight.

I'm writing this from my laptop, which is sitting on a piece of nicely painted MDF board, which started its life as part of a packing crate (reduce, reuse, recycle!), so it's not as though I am blocking the vents. In fact, I have even tried propping it up on my daughters foam blocks, one in each corner, but even over 1.5" off the wooden surface, my legs are still warmed up by the machine - through the MDF board!

I'm not sure what we can do about the issue. Dell tech support is pretty useless in my experience. I do have friends that work at the Dell Canada tech support center who know about the issue... I'll poke around and see what's what.

My Thinkpad runs fine on my lap without getting close to hot or even close to being uncomfortable. Even if I block all vents, it is fine...

I believe you... :D

My laptop actually gets cooler - the hotter it gets!
