My laptop died.

My IBM T21 will no longer boot into windows except in safe mode. There is nothing I can do to get it to boot normally. I can't even reinstall - XP's install will fail every time it tries to install drivers.

So, I ordered a Dell 600M.

Will only boot to safe mode. Memory either hard or Virtual (HD) issue.

Try a new memory module or could also be a bad spot on the hard drive.

Either way sounds like Lappy is still OK once which one is found to be the culprit.

mine too. it randomly locks up whenever it feels like it. sometimes while its booting, other time when its in windows. 🙁

I already replaced the HD once. And that seemed to help for a little while... It was locking up randomly for no good reason. It was OK after a BIOS update and a new HD for a month or so, but then it locked up again and I had to use system restore to get it to work. Then it locked up again about a week later (yesterday) and I haven't been able to make any progress at getting it to do anything except work in safe mode.

Why not try swapping out some of the likely culprits before springing for a whole new system? Seems like a little bit of a waste to me.


Swap out the ram+HD from another laptop and see if it works.

Chances are, based on your symptoms it is something simple like that.

You will hate the keyboard!!! IBM is having firesales on T42s right now! The 2378-FVU was going for less than $1500 (SXGA+ display, Radeon 9600, B/G wireless).
