My Lappy looses connectivity

Recently bought a Presario1700. At home I am hooking it with Netgear Router (--cable modem). The router is also used by my desktop. THe desktop runs on W98SE and the lappy on WinME. While the desktop works quite comfortably, the lappy looses connectivity after I close the browser try to reopen it. The only way I can regain connectivity is to restart the system. Renewing with WINIPCFG does not work. It has become quite frustrating. Any help will be highly appreciated.
