My Knee Keeps Popping Out!!!

My knee popped out for the first time about a year ago when I was playing basketball. A 6'5 guy could not keep his balance after a rebound and fell right on my knee. It popped out (not really dislocated since it popped right back in after 15 seconds or so) and my knee got really swollen for a few days. Now my knee pops out really easily no matter what sport I am playing. It pops out maybe 2 - 3 times a year. Should I be concerned?

This happens to me every once in a while, usually if I'm sitting with my legs crossed indian style. I don't know why it happens. I can only guess that some of my ligaments have gotten stetched.

Of course, it could be that tall people just have more knee problems than others (I'm 6'4"). I'm the only male in my family to not have knee surgery. :(

the crappy thing about joints is that they NEVER heal perfectly. Even after surgery I've heard of people with dislocated shoulders and knees having their stuff pop out every so often. Still, surgery can make it happen a lot less often (and prevent any other side effects). Have a sports medicine specialist look at it. Or an orthopedic specialist. Don't go to a regular doctor...he'll tap you on the knee and charge you 75 bucks for it.

Every once in awhile my knee will pop in and out of joint and let me tell you, it doesn't feel very good! Wonder why this happens? Is it due to weak ligaments?

The same thing happened to me when i was playing badminton about 3 years ago. It scared the sh!t out of me, took about 5 secs to pop back in (and it hurt like a bitch). Anyways, i just stopped playing badminton and other games involving running for a few weeks to give my knee time to heal- which it pretty much has. If your knee swelled that could be ligament damage so u might wanna see a doctor (that happened to my bro when he tore a ligament in his knee and needed surgery), luckily mine didnt.

Bump, I want to know too. This same thing started happening to me a few years ago after a snowmobiling accident, dosen't happen that much in the winter since I'm not that active, but in the summer usually once a month.. Maybe I should go to a dr. ...

I can pop my jaw, but only the right side. It's weird it started happening a few years ago. Sometimes it will get out of place without me knowing it and i'll open my jaw really fast and it will "POP" back into place. I sit there and think, man this should hurt, but it doesn't hurt at all.

My brother had this problem in both knees. At first it would just happen rarely during basketball, then got to the point that it would happen every month or more, one time when he was just walking. He went to an orthopedic surgeon, and eventually had patellar tendon transfer surgery on both knees.

It's a major surgery, he was on crutches for at least 2 months. His knees don't pop out anymore, but his basketball playing, running, etc., has been cut back a lot because of cartilage damage.

A fried of mine has a similar problem, he has a torn ACL in his knee. You definitely ought to have it looked at.

surgery is suck. pain is suck. I suppose I'll wait till the next time it happens, and when I'm laying on the ground, gritting my teeth because of the pain I will probably choose surgery :)

There are a ton of different reasons that might happen. My knee does the same thing all the time... In my case it's due to sleight malformation of my lateral meniscii, the crescent shaped piece of cartilage between femir and tibia combined with mild Osgood Slaughters (sp?) The popping I experience is the cartilage displacing and then popping back in.... hurts like a b!tch

Therapy is a possible option. Also, maybe pick up a stationary bike to help build up the muscles around the knee.
