My kitty is making a mess

My wife says she's either going to kill my cat or get rid of it. "Caramel" is a long haired calico, very pretty, craves attention. When my wife got her dog (a pug), it took her months to potty train it. But when I got my cat, I stuck her in the litter box once, and she went potty and always knew to go there.

But the last couple of months, since my Caramel has been fixed, she has been pooping outside the litterbox. At first I thought it was because the litterbox wasn't being cleaned on a regular basis, so I've been cleaning it every day, but the cat keeps on going only a few feet from it. And to make everything worse, she has diarrhea. 😱 I thought it was because my wife has been feeding her too much wet food at night (half a can) and the cat was gorging it, so we haven't been feeding her any wet food. But it hasn't stopped.

What is wrong with my kitty? :frown:

contact a vet. have you switched kitty litter? does the litter box have a cover on it? when my cat was fixed she wouldn't go in the litter box until we put a cover on it. and cleaning is another thing but you said you are doing that....not sure i guess. vet would be the best person to ask.

<< Take it to the vet. >>

We asked both the vet and SPCA, and they both say our pug is stressing out the cat. But she never had a problem like this before, and the dog and cat like each other's company, and while we're gone during the day the pug is left in the basement with access to outside.

I would suggest a visit to the vet. A change in bathroom habits in a cat can mean many things. If somehow it is hurting the cat when it is going to the bathroom it may come to associate the litter box with the pain and try to eliminate elsewhere. A vet visit will at least tell you if there are any physical reasons why your cat has changed it's behavior. It could be that it hurt her when she used the box after the spaying. At least it is going next to the box so putting down some paper will at least make the cleanup easier until you can get her back into the habit of using the box.

There's also a product or kind of litter that works as a "potty-training" agent. Check on the pet websites for the exact name.

so does that mean they are separated when you are not home? maybe they should if they are not. maybe they shouldn't be if they are. confused? 😉

Yea it has a cover. If we don't keep it clean she won't go in it, the smell is too much for her. Vet said it could be the kitty litter too, I had to switch to another brand awhile ago but I've kept it consistent since. We did have a problem with her going in our potted plants for a little while... but we used some cayenne pepper to fix that. Maybe I should put some soil in with her kitty litter?

Sorry to hear that. 🙁 I've always liked how cats adapt to litter boxers. When I got my cat I just plopped her in there once and she knew what to do from then on out. 2 weeks ago when I put the litterbox in a closet of a spare bedroom, I once again just plopped her in it and she knew where to go.

Hope you get it works out. 🙁

Yea, they're separated when we're not home. But together when we are. The cat doesn't seem to care either way as far as the potty trouble.

<< Give your cat an enema

j/k I wish I knew more about cats to help you out.

HAHHAHHAHAH! That is teh funniest thing ever!

Seriously, take the cat to the vet for a checkup to make sure there is nothing wrong physically. I had a cat that went to the bathroom outside the litter box because she associated the litterbox with pain. She had a real problem with bladder infections and eventually died due to kidney failure.

I miss her...

that sucks...i hope your cat problem gets better...but try the vet...

dogs are kinda picky too. wrong food = bad things and messed everywhere...

<< Maybe you should try moving the cat litter box where she is going to the bathroom. >>

I did, it worked only for a few days.
