I need a ~16 ounce cup (not sports related) to fill with water half way and put in the freezer and not have the bottom crack. Again, the "cup" is not sports related but hey, humor is grand.
 
wouldnt the ice expand upwards, since that would be the path of least resistance with only filling it half way? if so, it seems any cup would work.

as long as i can expand upwards without hinderance, i would think it wouldnt break it.

im no ice expert tho.
