My keyboard doesn't work every other reboot

I have an IBM Model M that I bought as new old stock. After I reinstalled Windows XP it has been flaky and sometimes doesn't work when I turn the computer on. The lights are on so the connection must be fine, but when I type nothing registers on the computer. I've moved it to the other PS/2 port and it does the same thing. Any ideas? I'm thinking about trying a PS/2 to USB adapter and see if that fixes it.

Edit: The only thing that is different on this installation than the last is the fact that I updated the motherboard's firmware. It's an Intel DG965WH. Could that be causing a problem with the PS/2 ports?

Update: I tried uninstalling the keyboard driver from device manager and letting Windows detect the keyboard and install the driver. I'm still having the same problem though.
