My iPod died

Well my ipod is officially fvcked up. I believe there is something wrong with the HD as i can hear a slight clicking noise like a HD starting up every few seconds. I have a couple non-standard modifications but they were installed about 1+ month ago and my iPods been working fine this morning when it deleted all my songs and the battery was magically at 1% and now, after attempting to charge the battery, i cannot select anything/restart/do anything with it. i would like to reboot in disk mode and see if i can find the problem somehow or at least eviscerate some files but with the lack of the menu-select functionality i'm stumped...

Photo iPod (4g?)
30 gig

Modifications (just in case):
skinned apple firmware
encyclopedia ipod (basically linux on ipod with a wikipedia e-book reader...)

does it respond? try resetting it. if you succesfuly do so, you can enter the diagnostic mode and test the ipod hdd to see if it is alright. if it ain't, well, look for a new hdd for your ipod on ebay? try opening the ipod software updater and restoring your ipod. never failed me.

I've tried to make it respond and it wouldn't do anything with the restart key signals so i left it alone for a while and listened to music on the computer and all of a sudden i see the little apple logo show up and then for some reason it starts loading up linux rather than the apple firmware. I was thinking "hey at least it's working now..." no... apparantly not because i can't move the selector in linux or restart or anything. At that point i just left it there so that battery will run out and it'll restart (hopefully...) when i plug it in. When i did have it in apple firmware and plugged it into my computer, itunes did not recognize it, nor did explorer though explorer knew SOME kind of USB Mass Device was plugged in...
