My connection here at college sucks... i am talking like 2k/sec bandwidth.. hell it would be faster on dial up.. at home i have adelphia powerlink and i can get speedy trasfers of 200-300k/sec.. my school here has this policy

-Effective 7/1/2002 Adelphia Communications will no longer install, or provide service for, cable modems in any of the dorm rooms at students' requests. This policy was instituted to accomodate *the schools*security needs, as well as to alleviate all possibilities of network interference and disruption caused from linking the two networks logically and/or physically

To me, this is BS..... they are forcing us to use there crappy T-1 for the entire campus and all the dorms.... all day, everyday the connection is slow... i can't even do school research.. and i can barely come here on AT....

Today the connection has been ultra slllllllllllllloooww so i am gonna go to BB or CC this weekend and get a "self-install" kit... i know this is against policy but i cant even do my school work.. my parents and i paid thousands of dolllars to come here and i should at least have a decent connection.. i am not planing on running a server or abusing any bandwidth. i just want to be able to get the job done... i dont even care if i get in trouble because to me this policy is unjust.... does anyone elses school have a simliar policy or suggestions? Thanks

^bump... we sent out an email and they acuatly came to the dorm room to reply.. basically they said last year kids where spliting the cable modem connection so they banned it for this year.. the kid who explained this all said he has been trying for 4 years to get more bandwidth... which wont happen.. the only way to solve the problem is to allow cable modems.. it turns out the MAIN SERVER is sercetly located in one of the dorms here basement... the guy who works here in IT said he lives off campus across the street and can get CRAZY speeds... oh well, i am gonna try and get signing up this weekend.. we will see what happens

they just upgraded the lines here

link to our usage graphs :D

it doesnt even get bogged down at peak times

i still can get transfers of 900K / s if the site is fast enough

and 3/4 MB /s within the same network if we are in the same subnet
and about 1MB /s if they arent

i dunno what they did but it is at least 3x as fast as it ever was last year

i guess after putting up with this crappy network and all its restrictions (now there are none used to be 1GB / day)

though Kazaa and Direct Connect ports are blocked i don t give a crap :D

does your school block Kazaa and other File Transfer software because im sure that kazaa alone is taking up 30-50% of your schools bandwidth alone if it is not being blocked

anyway what schoo and how big is itl? I seriously doubt a T1 could sustain more than a few hundred connections

we had 1 maybe 2 T3's just for the students last year and Comp labs and Offices used different lines and our lines were always slow

200K /s if your lucky most of the time 40 K/s would be good

i think you are SOL

if your internet is still fast you can try using http tunnel which reroutes everything through port 80 but i dont think that would help in this situation

thanks for the reply...

yes we have a single t-1 for all FIVE dorms... each dorm has 200-300 people in it.. thats why its so slow.... they even block kazaa and everything else... i can use http-tunnel but i can max out the trasfer rate on kazaa to like 2k/sec :(.. if i indeed can get a cable modem i heard the connection speeds are around 5mb/s.. :):) ... when i go home on friday i am gonna try to sign up ;)
