My insurance quotes...

I am looking to get a new car and have two cars in mind at the moment...

2004 Toyota Prius
2004 or 2005 Toyota Corolla

Now, neither of these are sporty cars and neither are terribly expensive...

I am male and 23 and have never been in an accident nor have I ever had a ticket...I am still in college and I rent an apartment...my credit is average I suppose with a score of right around 700...

I have gotten quotes from around 5-6 insurance companies and they are all are right around the same price...

The cheapest was $3200/year and the most expensive coverage was like $4500/year...why is it so damn high! I realize insurance usually drops considerably when one turns 25 but goddamn this is an outrage...

A friend of mine who is 24 just bought a fully loaded 2004 Mazda RX-8 for $30.1k and he is paying like $140/month for full coverage...why am I paying (or would be paying) $300+ for mine?!

This sucks...

Are you insuring the car in West Virginia? What companies did you check? Do your parents have an existing relationship with any insurance company or your grandparents? Does your school have any deals with certain companies? Are you in the military or reserves, or have a parent that is(USAA)? Are you living out of state? The quotes you got are certainly on the high side if you have a clean record and live in West Virginia.

Yeah, it is in WV, which has high insurance rates compared to the surrounding states...

I checked with Liberty Mutual, Nationwide, Geico, State Farm and a few others (Progressive isn't offered in WV)...I have been dealing with Liberty Mutual and so have my parents for the last 5-6 years...

I did graduate from Marshall University and they do offer a 15% discount for alumni...I work for the USCG but I do not know of any deals through them...I'll have to check that out..

Did you try getting quotes for other vehicles? I have no idea why it would be that high.

That just doesn't seem right, especially if you have never gotten a ticket.
I see 22 yr old driving WRX with cheaper rate.

I'd try to get a hold of all 3 credit reporting agencies' reports on you and see if there's anything there that shouldn't be.

Tell me about it...

Maybe I need to go see an actual agent instead of doing all this over the phone...perhaps then I can threaten his/her life until I am paying around $135/month...

I live in Wv and pay around $800 a year for two cars 😀 but then I am 28 and both are liability only. I don't know if its still the same but for me the big drop in insurance was when I turned 24 which might explain why your friends is cheaper. I use Erie Insurance Group btw. I say wait till your 24 to buy a new car. No way in hell I would pay as much or more in insurance a month than I do for the car.

I am going to have to do something...I wonder if the insurance rates differ depending on what part of the state you live in...Huntington and Martinsburg are two completely different parts of the state...I really don't even consider Martinsburg a part of WV to be honest...

Corolla's are usually top 10 for most stolen cars. With Toyota's bad anti-theft devices, other toyota's are probably stolen a lot too. On the other hand most sports cars like the rx-8 will have decent anti-theft devices. If you are in a high crime area, stolen vehicle stats could matter a lot on insurance quotes.

Uh, welp... Check your coverage amounts. That could be screwing you. If you're going to be getting financing, they sometimes require more insurance than a normal person would normally get.

Have you ever had your own insurance plan before (ie: not using your parent's insurance)? When I bought my first car, I was paying $450/mo for a 2k Civic, but it dropped to $225/mo after my first 6 months.

The first quote I got for a 2004 Honda Civic in Los Angeles was $5000 from 21st century. I'm in a similar situation.

Almost everyone else was quite a bit less. Try allstate.

Bet you have a gap in coverage dontcha?

I did hear some good news out of the rumour mill - male insurance is set to drop and female is going to rise.

About damn time, I say. I'm sick of being claim-free and still having to pay three times the insurance of some teeny-bopping ditz with four at-faults just because I have a penis. 😛

When is this supposedly going to happen?

I was paying almost $200/month with State Farm for full coverage on a 97 Ford Taurus. When I moved out into my apartment I picked up renters insurance with State Farm and my rates went down to $130 a month because I now have multiple policies with them. 🙂
