My car's insurance has just ended (State Farm no longer doing NJ). So I was wondering if I can get insurance where I go to school. My car is registered in NJ and I have NJ plates. So can I just go and get a policy here? Would I need to reregister my car and get new plates?

You would need to prove residency in the state. Register to vote, pay for utilities, taxes, etc., as well as get a driver's license in that state. There are other carriers in NJ, State Farm pulled out of NJ because of a dispute with the Insurance Commisioner.

Just MOVE! Get out of NJ while you still can!

I am moving out of NJ for grad school, and the first thing I am doing after I get my apt, is switching driver's license and getting new insurance. I'd rather have a card somewhere else, and go through that hassle then pay the high cost of insurance in NJ. Sooo worth it! But you need a PERMANT address to change it, a school addy won't cut it unless you live off campus.
