I am not going to talk about a bunch of numbers and benchmark scores, just my general experience in making this move.
In my previous set up I had a couple of EVGA GTX 780 FTW's in SLI. I had them OCed to 1150 on the core (I forget my memory OC now). They were good cards especially when I had first bought them a couple of years ago. At that time I was only gaming at 1080p so they were amazing. I stepped up to 1440p and they were still pretty good at most games. Recently one of my cards had started giving me problems so I figured it was on its way out. I had been on the fence on whether to wait for pascal or pick up a 980ti. The information I was reading on the web was that from a pure horsepower perspective, the 980ti would be a bit faster than the 780sli set up I had, but it was probably not worth the money to upgrade, even at 1440p and the vram deficit. However I came across a EVGA 980ti Classified for $560 because the original box was damaged. Couldn't pass it up.
Everything as been great so far. Even though 780sli should not be that much behind a 980ti, the gaming experience is just so much smoother...and cooler...and quieter! This 980ti runs so much cooler than my 780s. My 780s would get up to 75-80 to even 90 degrees c (only the top card) while gaming. The fans would be screaming and the ambient temps of the case would be quite high. My computer would turn into a heater while gaming. I have never seen my 980ti get above 65c and that is with an oc of 1315(boosts to 1517 under load)/7912. I could probably push the memory a bit more but I'll do that later. Better FPS and much lower temps. The extra vram is very nice in GTAV and other games that use a lot of vram.
So all in all, going from a multi gpu setup to this single gpu set up was a great move. I'm sure all of you are thinking "of course", but to actually see the difference in person is quite something. I don't think I will go multi gpu again. If anyone else is on the fence on whether to jump from 780sli (or maybe even 780ti sli) to a single 980ti, I'd say go for it even if pascal may come out this year. You will still see gains.
cliffs:
- 780sli was showing its age/starting to break down.
- Got an amazing deal on a 980ti Classified.
- Getting better FPS/performance and MUCH lower temps
- Highly recommend making the jump if someone else is in a similar situation.
