I would like a laptop that weighed no more than 5.5 lbs and was just over an inch thick. It would have a Pentium-M processor coupled with Radeon 9600 graphics. 15" SXGA display is a must. Add that to a 4x DVD+RW drive and a 60GB 7200 RPM HDD along with some 333 MHZ memory and we're almost done. Finish it off with an IBM-quality keyboard, a responsive touchpad with windows scroller and a button to shut it off when I am typing. Lastly put a SD/MMC input card somwehere on there and don't forget the 802.11G WiFi with the Bluetooth for my connectivity. I think that is about it. If I come up with anything else I'll be sure to add it on there.

Anyone else patiently waiting for the day when someone creates the laptop with EVERY single feature they are looking for?
 
Yeah, the T41p thinkpad I ordered last week have all the things your mention above expect the DVD-RW. The system is 1 inch thick and 5.4 lbs, m9600 based 128mb FireGL T2 video card, SXGA+, DDR 2700 and improved 7200rpm HD, it support bluetooth and all Wi-Fi solution. DVD-RW on this model will come at March in 2004.

I thoguht the T-Series only had 14" screens? This is also have the SD/MMC card input?
 
Select models of the R series will get you the 15" screen, max is UXGA. I do not believe the Thinkpads have those input slots, you'd probably have to use them through a PC Card .

Which is exactly why most people will not own a laptop that has the "best" of all components. You have to be willing to pay to play.
 
The problem is , as with all hardware there is no "best" of all components, for performance there are the destop replacement notebooks, for portability and battery life, there are the centrino based notebooks.

This just happens to be a combination that costs a LOT at the moment and particularly due to a video card that is "supposed" to be a workstation card. So the people that are buying this for gaming are paying a premium but not because they are getting a the best gaming laptop.

a 3d projector instead of a lcd screen
0 weight
fits in my wallet
no keyboard/touchpad - it knows exactly what I want to type/input

Why bother?

Hi:

You say that a DVD-RW will be available on the t41p in March 2004. Does this mean that the existing CD-rw that comes with it currently can be upgraded and replaced by the DVD-RW?

Additionally, does anyone have a measure of the true weight of the R50p with the power supply measured with a scale?

they will just release an ultrabay upgrade that's a DVD-RW, so you would need to buy it separate if you already own a thinkpad.

I'm in that boat.

The most I'd pay for a laptop is $1500 for a Dell Inspiron, or up to $2000 for a Dell Latitude.

You could get a nice sub $2000 IBM laptop but it will be older components, not the latest and greatest.

You get what you pay for.

You just described compaq's x1000, minus the 9600 (uses 9200 atm)

Yep(the Gigabyte N601 comes pretty close too).
The lack of the 9600 is why I have not purchased one yet.This next laptop is going to have to last me at least 2 years, so there is no harm in me waiting a few more months to see what happens.There is a rumor floating around that hp/compaq may kick a 9600 daughter card out the door later this month, but im going to have to wait and see.
