My idea for the electoral college.

I think we all agree that the electoral college has some problems.

What do you think of splitting electoral votes the same way they are allotted? Whoever wins a state gets 2 votes for the state, plus one per congressional district (like how votes are distributed in Maine and Nebraska).

Please explain what you're talking about, because that's exactly how it works now.

one big roadblock:
for it to work, all states would have to adopt it at the same time. otherwise, the states that did adopt it would be ignored and the ones that didn't, candidates would cater to so that they could swing all their votes one way.

he's saying whoever wins the congressional district would get 1 electoral vote, even if the state went to the other candidate. they wouldn't capture the state's entire electoral voting block just by winning the state.

How about an electoral college where one's vote in say Wyoming isn't worth 4x as much as someone in California....

Wyoming = 1 EV per 167,000 voters....

California = 1 EV per 650,000 voters....

Wyoming has 3 EV's right now, California has 55 EV's....

Ok, extrapulate 1 EV per 167,000 voters for every single state...

Wyoming remains 3 EV's as it should and California will be justly represented with 212 EV's.

How about base it purely on population and not giving hick states 2 free votes? The system is dumb.

Or you use the wacky idea of counting up all the votes in the country, and whoever has more, wins.

1 vote in California = 1 vote in Texas = 1 vote in North Dakota.

Hey, my state isn't the one who had rolling blackouts, and was going bankrupt until Arnold stepped in. Did Cali get Federal money to keep the power on?

Actually, if you consider the billions and billions and billions that Californians put into the Federal System that go to other states, you can make a case that they were given THEIR OWN MONEY BACK.

the problem is that if this were to happen it would even furthre limit the scope of the presidential campaign from the 15-20 swing states to the handful of districts within each state. the only fair way to go would be a popular vote with 1st and 2nd choice to stop the 3rd part from spoiling the election.

The main problem with this is if it was a close election you would have to recount the entire nation, but if we went to a secure compterized system this wouldn't be a problem either.
