My IDE cable cannot reach the motherboard. What should I do?

I bought this Codegen color case, it is a really nice case for 65$ shipped from
here.

Well the problem with the case is out of the four 5 1/2 inch bays I could only use the two at the top because the motherboard blocks the drives from going all the way into the case so the drives hang out by about an inch.
I have a burner and a dvd and a hard drive that I want to hook up.

I want to have my DVD and hard drive on primary.

The question is do you know the colored end of the IDE cable for the primary connector, Does that have to go in the motherboard or can I put the colored end in the hard drive and the other end into the motherboard?
I tried it out and my hard dive was not recognized.
I was wondering if it was something I was doing wrong or if you just cant do this and why?
If I was able to do this I could get the cable to reach my DVD.

Are there any other things I could do?

if it's an ata66/100 cable, the blue end goes to the m/board ide connector, black for master & grey for slave!

you could try getting a longer ide cable.

Blue goes to motherboard.
Gray to slave.
Black to master.
I think most cables are configured so that the two plugs closest together go to your drives and then a long gap to the mobo plug.
In this case your lead should be long enough.
If not, look for a longer one.
I would go: burner and DVD on secondary IDE port with DVD on master, and then HDD on primary IDE as master.
Good luck.

Most of the 66/100 cables I have seen list:
Blue - MB ( First )
Gray - Slave ( Second )
Black - Master ( Last )

As for hooking up the system, HD is always master, and I would leave the slave open.
On the secondary channel, I would run the Burner then the DVD Player as the slave.

Great information, thanks.

I will have plenty of length if I put DVD and Burner on secondary.

Just stinks with this case that you cant use the bottom two bays.

They do sell cables that are longer than the standard size (which I think is about 18" ) I bougth a 24" dual ata66/100 cable to run my Maxtor ATA100 PCI card to my spare drives.

I've run into before wher I could only use 1 of the 3 bays, and they had aa DVD and a burner. Whoa.

Oh Tunaboo that stinks.
I think I would have flipped if that was me.
This is a major flaw in case design.

I was pretty annoyed when I found out that I could not use the bottom two but for the person I am building for they would never put anything else in so its okay.

I just will not buy anymore cases from these people.

I always thought a case was a safe purchase, now I have to be nervous on my future purchases, especially if it is only a three bay!!

What are these case designers thinking?
