Hi
I have a 9mth olf IBM GXP 60gig harddisk and there are alot of scratching noises recently. which in my opinion, a harddisk faiulre is inevitable.

2 days ago, I ran the ibm drive fitness test, bad sectors was found. had to bite the bullet and do a low format and format 50 gig worth of applications and date(do not have an extra harddisk to do a backup)

Everything seems fine for 2 days. NOW, the scratching noise return and I did the fitness test again. bad sectors was found.

I decided to RMA back, i hope somebody can help me with my following doubts

my questions are:

1) I will like to purchase another Maxtor 60 gig harddisk(same size so tat in the future, i may be able to do raid), what is the best method of transferring everything from my ibm harddisk now so that i can just plug in the new maxtor harddisk and run from there

2) if i have 2 harddisk(ibm ATA 100 and maxtor ATA 133- both 60 gig)
and they run in the same primary ide cable. Will I notice a slowdown in speed as compared to maybe a 100 gig harddisk.

3) in the future when I decide to run raid, do I need to have the 2 same brand of harddisks and both run at the same rate.(Maxtor is ATA 133 and ibm is ATA 100)

I understand this post is VERY long but i certainly somebody can iron out my doubts

cheers

there are utilities to do that even Maxtor includes one with your new Retail Boxed drive

not really

for best performance yes even better to get the pair at the same time as then you have a better chance of getting same build type

no trouble

Let us know what they send you for a replacement, I hear someone saying that they got a 120gxp inplace of their faulty 60gxp. I have 2 60gxp 40gig drives at the moment, both working fine thus far. My parents pc however......a single 20Gig 60gxp that is starting to make some strange noise during disk access, kinda like scratching. It was always a very quiet drive before. I have a feeling it'll fail shortly, it's only about 6 months old.

Just like what Andy said...

1. Use Norton Ghost while you still can and that Deathstar 60GXP of yours is still alive

2. Your drive setup will run at ATA100 if you run them on the same cable... no biggie... its not like you reach 133 all the time anyway.

3. Your raid array will perform as slow as your slowest drive. Its not really required to have the same exact drive... its just there for consistency. If you have different drives then your RAID array will probably just slow you down anyway.
