My IBM 75GXP goes down..

It wasn't related to the shutdown error occuring with WinMe. It looks like the molex power pin connector on the PCB of the HD came loose and it wouldn't start up anymore. I contacted IBM and they said I'd be able to RMA it, but might replace it with a refurbished drive. Do they usually replace drives with refurbished ones? Anyways, anyone know if soldering the pin back on would void warranty where they wouldn't replace it? I'm still kinda pissed this happen, since there's no current way for me to even back-up from it, and I'm stuck using a 3.4GB drive for now.. from IBM. :|

Thought I'd give a warning, if it seems hard to connect your molex connector to your 75GXP, be a bit more careful.

Sorry to hear that man, you must have REALLY jacked it! Just solder it back on, (i have done lots of soldering and everything still works 😀..).

You should demand a new unit replacement. You didn't initially buy a refurbished unit did you?

If you need that data, I'd try soldering it. That is if you can get to it. Those pin are pretty close.. Anyway if it doesn't work You can always wick off the solder work and they will never know the difference..

I just went through an RMA on my 75GXP.
It's usually refurb'd units, but you have to remember, it aint joe shmoe throwing harddrives together back there. They are tested as well.
IT varies on whether you get a refurb or a new one though. It's whatever they have extra's of..
🙁

Mine is fine so far tho. (3 weeks)

Vlad, I don't think I jacked it. I just put in the connector, took out it about 2 months later, put it back in, and it wouldn't spin.

Dealer, I did buy a new unit and requested a new unit, but like Phuz said, they probably give out whatever they have available.

Thanks for help, I've decided not to solder it, but I'm gonna try to find a way to connect it anyways so I can atleast back up my important files and do my big 15k RC5 flush. 🙂

Refurb hard drives are usually just as good as new drives. The warranty is still good for 3 years, so don't sweat it.
