My IBM 75GXP 30GB is Dying, and I have a Question

Okay, this really sucks. I bought the original back in Jan. and it died in Apr. I got the replace ment later that month, and now the replacement is loosing sectors like the first one. Lost all my data erasing the disk, and there's no way I'm doing all the work of putting the data back on the disk, only to have the disk loose sectors again.

The first time I RMA'ed the drive, it took a long time for them to ship out the packaging to me, and then for me to ship them the drive, and them to ship the replacement out to me. I was wondering if I can have them ship the replacement out before the old drive gets to them. I think I heard sometime ago someone used a credit card to do this, so IBM could protect themselves from being ripped off. So, is this possible?

Call IBM. I think I read something about that this spring when this whole mess was occuring for most of the users here. Your best bet is to give IBM a call and find out what their policies are.

ISAslot, did you put in this MS IDE patch? Do you get bad sectors after a reboot/shutdown? I had a drive do that, called IBM and they said to put the patch in. I didn't believe them, but did it anyway. It fixed the problem and it has been fine for 6 months since. The thing is, you have to do it before things get too bad. On this drive, if you format it and scandisk it, are the bad sectors still there?

i've heard that they stopped this policy because they've been getting so many drives back. but you should contact their tech support to make sure. i know that maxtor supports this, cuz i'm going through it now.

I did download that patch.

Bad sectors have shown up for me when I try to open a program. All of the sudden the HD will make scratching noises, and will continue to do so. Sometimes I can end task, and that cancels the request on that part of the drive, but this is shortlived, because whenever I access the same part of the disk, the same thing happens. When I would run scandisk, it would get so far, then make the noises, and continue to do so until I canceled scandisk. On the first drive I got, when I would try to format, it would get to the bad areas, and make a noise for a while, then it would skip that area (if I can remember correctly, been a while).

I ran the IBM fitness test, and it came up with bad sectors. I knew all hope was lost on this drive. So I ran the erase command in the program.

This usually fixes the problem, but when I ran the test after I erased it, I got the same noises as before; except this time, the test passed. 😕

When I used the erase method to repair the first IBM HD I got, the drive died completely not long after. So, back to IBM goes this HD.
