My IBM 60GXP hard drive is freaking me out

Whenever the drive undergos heavy activity (i.e. moving large files from one partition to the next) I hear loud and repetitive clicks.. and those clicks arent from windows :Q

Is anyone farmiliar with this?

Yes.

Last week while building a new rig for a mate the HDD gave up.

We got a new drive today and it makes strange clicking noises. Hasn't failed like the other one did so I guess it's normal.

DEPENDING ON IF YOU HAVE A HANDY UTILITY PROGRAM OR NOT LIKE NORTON, DO A DISK SCAN. IF YOU DONT, WHICH I SUSPECT THAT YOU DO NOT CLICK: START, PROGRAMS, ACCESSORIES, SYSTEM TOOLS, SCANDISK. THAT IS AS LONG AS YOU ARE USING M$ WINDOWS.😀

Well, speaking as one whose 75gxp died this week with no warning signs, I'd seriously consider getting another hard drive if I were you. The 60gxp's haven't been around that long to get a meaningful evaluation, so the vote is still out on how well this line will fare - but for obvious reasons, I'm anti-IBM drives.

If you're hearing what sounds like potential "I'm dying" sounds, replace it. Above all, back up as frequently as you can.

"hm.. i dont think w2k includes the scandisk utility. "

My Computer-->Right Click on the C: drive and choose properties---->Click on the "tools" tab--->choose "Check Now"

Had an IBM 60 GXP and a friends got a 75GXP. Mine died, without any overclocking of the PCI bus!

Yes they are fast, but too unreliable. Got a Quantum fireball plus AS and never looked back. This drive is just as fast as the IBM, if not faster according to my benchmarks and is quiet.

Since the price of these quantums are below that of IBM drives, I'd grab one now!

Check out this site from IBM IBM Drive Noises, listen to all of them, and if you can match your noise with one on the site, you can find out whats wrong, and get an RMA. Hope this helps you out.

Tharyn, nice link to the hard drive noises. There actually pretty enternaining to listen to😱 Me thinks I need to get out more

Bah the failue rates of 60GXPs are still lower than ABIT mobos 😉

Some drives of every type fail. I will take my ultra-quiet drive with great preformance. w00t. Just because a lot of people have a drive andthey are vocal about their problem, does not man JACK. I have worked with every type of HD out there, and IBMs as a whole are not any worse than any other brand.

Tharyn: How on Earth did you find that? You just gotta love IBM just for that.

Tuna: Right. Ive had hundreds of drives and IBM always turned out to be the best. Recently saw a Matrox die at a friends place of business, lost weeks of work. (Nobody, but nobody backs up) Matrox utility wouldnt even recognize drive as present. Drive was only a month old (Dia 60). While we were talking about it the lights in his office flickered. Geez. I had him go out and purchase a Belkin Gold 650 UPS.
The alarm thing kept going off so many times we had to disable it.
Duh?

Heres a secret tip (just for the people on this thread):
Many times here I have to chuckle when I see those "post your HDD Tach scores". The screenshots often show big dips in the read speed graph, while its pretty straight for others. Well, there is no such thing as a perfect platter - they all have manufacturing defects, with weak domains that lead to unreadable sectors. When the hard drive tries to do the test, it HESITATES at the unreadable segment (dips). All you have to do WHEN YOU GET A NEW DRIVE (or after you format an old one)is
to do a scan disc, check thorough, auto fix errors. The hard drive will now SKIP those sectors and your trace will be beautiful.
And one more: if you hold the mouse absolutely immobile with one hand while you tick the button to start HDD Tach, the dip at the beginning will disappear.

autofix.. i remember when i did that on my maxtor 1GB... bad sectors were lining up left to right across the screen... my HD size went from 1GB to 600 some... heh. needless to say, i got a new HD 🙂

<I will take my ultra-quiet drive with great preformance.>

TunaBoo, I was saying this just two weeks ago. 😉 It was a great drive, relatively quiet, good speed, and a great performer - until it died. Mine was 6 months old. IMO, the numbers are too great for it to be just a case of a small number of people who are "vocal about their problem."

I don't know a HELL of a lot about the inner workings of a hard drive. I am not some GURU like many people here claim to me. I just know I have had thousands of HD's pass through my hands, and IBM's have NOT been a problem company. Now Fujistu (sp?). Thats a pretty crappy drive. But IBM's are pretty solid. If you dont like them dont buy them, but why try to spread mis-information?

Isn't it kinda funny how when a thread gets longer, we sort of lose track on the original problem. Sometimes I read these just to find out who is going to bash who, and who will jump in and try to calm the storm. I think its become obvious that IBM does make great HDD's, but like every manufacturer that makes anything, there are always a few that get out and become flawed.
UCBPRIDE: You probably need to try and RMA your HDD. Its a good product in general, but your "sounds" like it is on its way to complete failure. Hopefully you have made a backup of anything that is important to you. Good Luck!!

UCB, I know the sounds can be a bit unnerving, but I believe they are normal. I have a 45GB 75GXP still working great, it makes similar noises. They're just like normal clicks a couple of db higher than the others. I was freaking out at first too. Then at work I've used and seen several 60GXPs, 20GB and 60GB ones, and they were making the same noises, and all those drives are still working great. I've concluded that these are normal, and I wouldn't pay any more attention to them. Unless your noises are different from mine! 😉

Ugh... those sounds at ibm's site wasn't nice! I really don't want to hear something like that in my computer.
