My IBM 60GXP Does Not Play Well With Others

So like a moeron I originally configured my rig to have both the CD-Burner and DVD-ROM drive on the secondary IDE channel. Well I smartened up today and attempted to put the DVD-ROM Drive as slave on the primary, with the IBM Deskstar as the master device on the primary.

The IBM refuses to be detected when something is a slave to it. I have the HD and the DVD Drive both on the same channel, and if I pull the DVD Drive's IDE connector and bootup, the HD plays along nicely and allows itself to be seen. But when I connect the DVD Drive as a slave and bootup, the Deskstar isn't seen by the BIOS (there's no device listed under the Primary-Master position) and I get a "No 80-Pin IDE connector detected" error in the BIOS right after the BIOS scans for IDE devices. Mother b!tch.

I've got the same Deskstar and I'm not understanding why you'd want to move a slower DVD drive onto the same chain as an ATA 100 HD ?

I've got my burner and dvd on the secondary ide controller using a standard 40 pin ribbon and my deskstar on the primary alone using the 80 pin. If I wish to burn a copy of anything from a CD I just copy it to my HD and burn it from
there.

If you're looking to be able to rip right from a cd to the burner and cut the time involved in doing so, why not pick up a Promise controller card, put the HD on that and then give the burner and dvd drive the primary and secondary mb controllers ?

Well I want faster disc-to-disc burns, but is that the reason the Deskstar refuses to be seen, because it'll be sharing with a slower device?

I guess I'll have to live with it. 🙁

placing that dvd drive on the same channel will probably drop your hd down to ata33 ... probably not a good idea...
my ignorance for you
